ChatGPT became a media channel: OpenAI opened an ad counter inside the conversation, and that changes how your company shows up to the customer

bySteply4 min read

OpenAI announced that it opened a paid, self-service advertising system inside ChatGPT itself. Any advertiser can sign in, build a campaign, choose an audience, and track results. The goal the company stated for 2026 is to bring in US$ 2.5 billion in advertising. This is not a test, not a pilot, it is a new channel being born the size of a large social network.

This post is for the business owner and manager who still sees ChatGPT as an internal productivity tool. From now on, it is also the place where your customer searches, decides, and discovers brands. Whoever understands this first will catch the phase when advertising is cheap and the competitor is still asleep.

1. The big shift: the customer stopped searching on Google

For twenty years, the path was simple. The customer had a question, opened Google, typed it in, compared results, and chose. Whoever showed up at the top of Google sold. Whoever invested in Google Ads existed.

That path is breaking apart. In 2026, a large share of the searches that used to go to Google now go to ChatGPT. The customer no longer wants ten links to open, they want a direct answer. And they will use the tool that gives that answer. ChatGPT, by becoming a media channel, is placing the advertiser at exactly that moment of decision.

2. What changes in practice for your marketing

When a person asks ChatGPT 'what is the best management system for a small clinic?', from now on the answer can bring sponsored recommendations, the same way Google brings ads above the results. The difference, and it is huge, is that the customer already arrived there with the question fully formed, with context, and usually with the intent to decide quickly.

In sales terms, this means that the kind of visitor this channel brings tends to be of much higher quality than a banner click. Anyone used to Facebook Ads knows the frustration of paying for a like that turns into nothing. ChatGPT Ads, when done well, is the opposite: fewer clicks, more real conversation, more sales.

3. Who wins first, and why

Every new media channel has a golden window. In the beginning, there are few advertisers competing for the same space, so the cost per appearance is low and the chance of being seen is high. That is how it was with Google, with Facebook, with Instagram. Whoever got in early built a customer base buying cheap. Whoever arrived later paid three, four, ten times more.

With ChatGPT Ads it will be no different. A small company, with a small budget, can today test a campaign without fighting a giant. Eighteen months from now, when everyone finds out, that same budget will not even pay for the test.

4. The trap: advertising before knowing what to advertise

The most common mistake in a new media channel is throwing money away in a rush. The anxious entrepreneur sees a competitor advertising, creates an account, launches a campaign, burns through the budget, concludes that it does not work, and gives up. The problem was not the channel, it was the lack of preparation.

Before thinking about ChatGPT Ads, three questions have to be answered on paper: who is the ideal customer with a name, a problem, and the words they use to describe what they feel, which offer do you want to test first with clear price and timeline, and how will you measure results that go beyond just clicks, but conversations started, proposals sent, sales closed. Without that, the new system only speeds up the burning of money.

5. The side effect: your marketing has to become conversational

An ad on a social network worked in a short, visual, high-impact format. An ad on ChatGPT is different: the interaction happens inside a conversation. The user asks, reads, asks again, compares. Whoever comes in with slogan-and-banner marketing material comes out looking bad. Whoever comes in with content that answers a real question, clearly, wins.

This changes who you need on the team. The person who writes your marketing material now needs to understand question-and-answer, real customer objections, explaining something complex in plain language. It is no longer a designer with a slogan. It is someone who knows how to sell in dialogue.

6. The message for those who still think it is too early

Every time a new media channel is born, the same group of people says the same phrase: 'I will wait for it to mature'. Those are the ones who pay dearly later. The difference between those who grow in digital and those who stay complaining that 'it used to be cheaper' is who gets into the new channel while it is still unfamiliar.

You do not need to put your entire marketing budget into ChatGPT tomorrow. You do need to set aside a small slice, test, learn, adjust. A year from now, either this channel has become an important part of your revenue or you have concluded that it is not for you. In both cases, you know more than the competitor who stayed waiting.
