Anthropic, the company behind Claude, published 17 ready-made capabilities called Skills. Each one is a specialist trained for a specific task: generating a report, building a spreadsheet, creating a presentation, testing a system. Instead of a generic AI that "tries," you get one that already knows the procedure.
We listed all 17, from the most famous to the most unusual, and translated each one into where it delivers results for your business: less manual work, less rework, and more output ready in the format your team already uses.
What a Skill is, without the jargon
Think of a new employee who arrives with the company's procedure manual already in hand. They do not need to be taught from scratch every time: when the right task comes up, they open the manual and execute it the agreed way. A Skill is exactly that for artificial intelligence (AI), a folder of instructions it only opens when the task calls for it.
The detail that matters for business: the AI does not carry all the manuals all the time. It pulls only what the task requires, when it requires it. This makes the work faster, cheaper, and more predictable, because each capability is specialized and tested, not a generic guess.
The four most famous: they produce a finished document
These are the most widely used because they solve what every office does every day. A text request goes in, a file in the format your team opens without adjustments comes out.
- pdf: reads, creates, merges, and fills PDFs. Takes a scanned contract and extracts the data, generates a formatted proposal, fills in the same form a hundred times with no manual typing.
- docx (Word): creates and edits Word documents with tables, images, and formatting. The monthly report, the contract, and the proposal come out ready in the house standard.
- xlsx (Excel): builds spreadsheets with formulas and even formatted financial models. Cash flow, budget, and sales reports without building cell by cell.
- pptx (PowerPoint): creates and edits presentations already following design rules. Monday's meeting presentation comes out structured in minutes, not hours.
The ones for custom software builders
Here the audience is more technical, but the outcome is a business one: this is the group that transforms AI from an "assistant that talks" into a "system that acts inside your tools."
- mcp-builder: helps build the "connectors" that link AI to your systems (MCP is the standard that connects AI to your ERP, CRM, or database). It is what allows the AI to look up a real order and update a record, not just give advice.
- claude-api: the guide for embedding Claude inside your own product or system the right way (API is the bridge that connects one piece of software to another). For those who will add AI to what they already sell.
- web-artifacts-builder: builds small interactive applications inside the conversation itself, like a calculator, a price simulator, or a dashboard. A working prototype without opening a full software project.
- frontend-design: builds screens with a professional look that avoids the generic "made by AI" feel. It is the difference between an interface that looks like a template and one that looks like a real product.
- webapp-testing: tests a website or system on its own, clicking like a real user, to find what broke before the customer does. Fewer errors going live in front of the people who pay.
- skill-creator: the capability that creates other capabilities. It packages a company procedure into a reusable skill and even tests whether it works. It is the piece that teaches the AI your way of working.
The design and visual identity ones
Less common in everyday office work, but valuable for those who manage brand and visual materials.
- canvas-design: generates magazine-quality visual art, in image and PDF formats. Posters, covers, and campaign pieces with a finished look, not a rough draft.
- brand-guidelines: applies a brand identity (colors, fonts, spacing) consistently across everything that is generated. In the official repository it comes with Anthropic's own brand as the example. The idea is to replace it with yours.
- theme-factory: generates professional color palettes already paired with matching fonts. Useful for standardizing the look of a new material or product without commissioning a full brand study from scratch.
The communication and teamwork ones
The most discreet group, aimed at those who write a lot of documents and announcements.
- doc-coauthoring: writes documents alongside you, in clear stages: draft, review, and refinement. Good for long proposals, internal policies, documents that need several rounds.
- internal-comms: generates internal announcements from templates by category. The HR notice, the operations update, and the executive bulletin come out in the company's tone, without starting from a blank page.
The most unusual: creative and curious
The last two are the ones that look least like office tools, and they show just how far the concept can stretch.
- algorithmic-art: creates generative art, the drawings and patterns made by code, with a different result every time. More of a creative curiosity than a spreadsheet, but useful for generating backgrounds, textures, and unique visual pieces.
- slack-gif-creator: makes animated GIFs optimized for Slack (the team chat application). The most unusual on the list: it literally exists to create animated stickers for team conversations.
What this list teaches about AI in your business
Notice the pattern. From the spreadsheet to the GIF, every Skill is the same idea: a packaged procedure that the AI only opens when it needs to. The value was never in "having AI." It is in having the AI that already knows your procedure, your contract format, your billing flow, your way of closing an order.
The 17 official Anthropic skills are generic examples, by design. They exist to show what is possible. What actually moves the needle in an operation is having skills built for your company, written on top of your own process. That bridge, from generic capability to the capability that knows your business, is what Steply builds to order.
